Choosing between them

Most enquiries we get start with a symptom rather than a product. Condensation on a wall, a room that feels clammy, hot water running out, an electricity bill that keeps climbing, a doorway that has to stay open. The product follows from the problem, so it is worth working backwards.

If the problem is moisture

Too much moisture and too little are both common here, sometimes in the same building.

Excess moisture shows up as condensation on cold surfaces, mould, corrosion in plant rooms, packaging softening in storage, and a space that feels damp despite the air conditioning running. That is a job for a dehumidifier, from the industrial and commercial range in portable, floor standing or ceiling ducted form, a dedicated swimming pool dehumidifier for pool halls, or desiccant where the space runs cold or needs very low humidity.

Air that is too dry is less obvious but more expensive in industry. Paper curls and jams, yarn breaks, static damages electronic components, and product loses weight in storage. That is a job for an industrial humidifier, with ultrasonic units where a cool mist and low energy use suit the space.

Air conditioning removes some moisture as a side effect of cooling, but it controls temperature, not humidity. Once the thermostat is satisfied it stops, and so does the moisture removal. That is why a building can be cold and damp at the same time, and why these are different machines rather than a setting on the air conditioning.

If the problem is hot water

Water heating is one of the largest electrical loads in most UAE buildings and usually the easiest one to reduce. Four options, and the right one depends on the building rather than on which is best in the abstract.

Solar water heaters have the lowest running cost once installed, and suit buildings with usable unshaded roof area and steady daily demand.

Heat pump water heaters are the better answer where roof space is limited, and they perform particularly well in this climate because their efficiency rises with ambient temperature rather than falling.

Electric hot water storage tanks are the simplest and cheapest to install and the most expensive to run, which makes them right for low or intermittent demand.

Boilers take over where the requirement is process heat or large scale hot water rather than domestic supply.

If the problem is process heat

Boilers cover a wider range than most people expect, and the type follows the duty. Steam for process work in food production, laundries, textiles and pharmaceutical manufacturing. Hot water for heating and large scale domestic supply. Thermal oil where the process needs temperatures higher than water can practically deliver. Electric where there is no fuel supply or flue.

If the problem is a doorway or an open area

Air curtains hold a controlled stream of air across an opening so conditioned air stays in and heat, humidity, dust and insects stay out, without closing the entrance. For retail and food businesses the insect exclusion often matters as much as the energy saving.

Misting systems cool terraces, courtyards, entrances and other semi open areas that cannot practically be air conditioned, using evaporation rather than refrigeration.

If the problem is storage

Water storage matters more here than in cooler climates, because tank material and construction determine how the stored water behaves and how long the tank lasts. We supply stainless steel tanks and serpentine coil tanks for systems that need an integrated heat exchanger.

What the UAE changes

Most equipment guidance is written for temperate climates and applying it here produces predictable disappointments.

Air curtains are specified heated in Europe. Here the sensible default is ambient, because adding heat works against what the building is trying to do. Heat pumps are derated for cold winters in northern markets, while here they sit near the top of their efficiency band almost year round. Ultrasonic humidifiers run happily on mains water in soft water regions, but here, untreated, they distribute fine mineral dust across the space. Solar collectors need dust management that simply is not a consideration in wetter countries.

Two conditions drive most of it. Water hardness scales tanks, elements and pipework. Airborne dust fouls coils, collectors and intakes continuously. Neither causes an outright failure. Both reduce performance gradually until someone notices the running cost.
