Solar Water Heater Repair in Dubai
Climatech has been supplying, installing and servicing water heating systems in the UAE since 1995. We repair solar water heaters across Dubai for villas, apartment buildings, labour accommodation, hotels and light industrial sites.
Common solar water heater faults
Most call-outs we attend fall into one of the following categories.
No hot water at all
Usually an electrical fault rather than a solar one. The backup immersion element or its thermostat has failed, a breaker has tripped, or the timer controlling the backup heater has been left off. Where a system has been running fine and then stops overnight, the electrical side is the first place to look.
Water is warm but never properly hot
This points at the solar circuit rather than the electrics. Common causes are a layer of dust and grit on the collector glass cutting the amount of energy absorbed, an air lock stopping proper circulation, a failed pump on a forced-circulation system, or a temperature sensor reporting the wrong value to the controller so the pump runs at the wrong times.
Scale build-up in the tank and pipework
UAE mains and tanker water is hard, and solar tanks run hot for long periods, which is precisely the condition in which scale forms fastest. Scale insulates the heating element, so the system draws more power for less hot water, and it narrows pipework until flow drops noticeably. Descaling a tank and element is one of the more common jobs we carry out, and it is usually far cheaper than replacing a system that has simply been left unserviced.
Leaks
Leaks show up at threaded joints, at the tank flange, around the pressure and temperature relief valve, or from the collector header itself. A relief valve that drips constantly is not always faulty; it is often doing its job because pressure in the system is too high, which points to a failed expansion vessel or a pressure-reducing valve that needs attention.
Pump, controller and sensor faults
On pumped systems the circulation pump, the differential controller and the two temperature sensors work as a set. A fault in any one of them shows up the same way from the tap: lukewarm water, or hot water at odd times of day. These are diagnosed by testing the parts against each other rather than by replacing them one at a time.
Corroded anode and tank corrosion
Most steel hot water tanks carry a sacrificial anode that corrodes so the tank does not. Once it is spent, the tank begins to go. Checking and replacing an anode is inexpensive; replacing a tank that has been left to rust through is not.
Why solar water heaters fail earlier in the UAE
Three local conditions shorten system life here compared with cooler, softer-water climates.
Water hardness. High mineral content accelerates scaling inside tanks, elements and pipework.
Dust. Collector glass in Dubai accumulates a fine film quickly. It is not always visible from ground level, but it measurably reduces the energy reaching the absorber. Systems near construction work or major roads foul faster.
Stagnation heat. During long summer holidays when nobody is drawing hot water, a collector left in full sun with no flow through it reaches very high temperatures. That is hard on seals, glycol where it is used, and the collector itself.
None of these are faults in the system. They are reasons a system needs servicing rather than only repairing.
Repair or replace?
Honest answer: it depends on which part has failed and how old the system is. Elements, thermostats, pumps, valves, sensors and controllers are consumable parts and are worth replacing on almost any system still in reasonable condition. A tank that has corroded through, or a collector with a cracked absorber, is a different question, and at that point the cost of the repair starts to approach the cost of a new system that will be more efficient and carry a fresh warranty.
We will tell you which of the two situations you are in before any work starts. If a system is genuinely at the end of its life, we would rather say so than sell you a repair that buys six months.
Servicing and preventive maintenance
Most of the failures above are predictable, and a periodic service catches them while they are still cheap. A service visit covers cleaning the collectors, checking and descaling the element, inspecting the anode, testing the relief valve, checking system pressure, verifying the controller and sensors are reading correctly, and checking every joint for early signs of weeping.
For buildings where hot water outages create real disruption — hotels, labour accommodation, clinics — a scheduled maintenance arrangement is more sensible than waiting for a breakdown.
Booking a repair
Call +971 54 574 2443 or email info@climatech.ae with the type of system you have — rooftop thermosiphon or pumped, and the approximate tank size if you know it — along with a description of the symptom and, if you can, a photo of the unit. That is usually enough for us to tell you what is likely at fault and what the visit will involve before anyone is sent out.
If you are weighing a repair against a new installation, our solar water heater page covers the systems we supply, and heat pump water heaters are worth comparing where roof space is limited. For electric-only replacements, see electric hot water storage tanks.
Frequently asked questions
My solar water heater is not producing hot water. Is the panel broken?
Usually not. Collectors have no moving parts and tend to outlast everything else in the system. A sudden loss of hot water is far more often an element, thermostat or breaker problem.
How often should a solar water heater be serviced?
Annually is a reasonable baseline in the UAE, and more often for systems in dusty locations or buildings with heavy hot water demand.
Can a leaking tank be repaired?
Sometimes, if the leak is at a fitting or flange. If the tank body itself has corroded through, it needs replacing — a patched tank fails again.
Why is my relief valve dripping?
Often because system pressure is too high rather than because the valve is faulty. It is worth diagnosing properly, because simply capping a relief valve is dangerous.
Do you repair systems you did not install?
Call us with the system type and we will confirm what we can do for your particular unit.
